So if you make this Dump Cake by following the directions it looks and tastes more like a cobbler. It is delicious! The picture is deceiving because it looks like a cake...Without eggs to make it rise there is no way this cake would turn out like the picuture. If I could share my pic with you I would.

I have been serving this cake for 40+ years when someone made it for my bridle shower. I have used chocolate cake with cherry, Spice cake, with apple, Blueberry pie filling with white cake and all with pinnapple. GREAT

I've made Dump Cake before, but the one I made today was the best so far. It was very, very good!

Tried this one today. I know it was cheating but I mixed the cake batter before I poured it over the other drop ingredients. I also melted the butter for more even distribution. I omitted cherries and doubled up on pineapple. Added a little brown sugar for fun. My dad loved it and he hates everything!!! Will def make again.

I have made several versions of this cake since finding the receipe. I made it with just cherry, just pineapple, and just blueberry. The cherry and blueberry were made with one can of the fruit in juice/liquid (you can find them in the same area as you do the pie filling) and one can of pie filling. The pineapple I used the crushed pineapple undraines and a can of tidbits drained (used the juice to make a glaze to dripple over the cake). All three turned out excellent! Also on the cherry I didn't use any nuts and it was still great.

I made this cake as a dump cake and followed the directions as written with few small changes. When I first put in the pineapple and cherry filling I mixed them together, I don't "dump" very well and all the cherry was kind of stack in the middle of the pineapple. I doubled the pecans and the butter, then I sprinkled white sugar over the top. I used very little, more for visual effects than taste. It gives the top a little sparkle. It didn't look solid like the picture but the cake still rose as high. It was easy, fast, and excellent taste . . . even if I didn't get any! I took it to the local cafe I give cakes to and it was gone within two hours!

Why did my cake not come out like the picture posted?
Comment by: lola1614 (no discussions) on Aug 30, 2012 at 04:46 PM
Because they mixed the cake by the directions on the box and thats not a dump cake.

I just mixed up this cake and stuck it in the oven. I couldn't find cherrie filling so I used 2 cans of apple pie filling. I added cinnammon to the yellow cake mix. I mixed the cake batter according to the directions. Will let you know how it turns out.

It's not a dump cake if you mix it like it says on the box. The idea is to
dump stuff in there and the stick of butter helps it make the cake, along with the juice in the pineapple. Been making these for years and years.

I melted the butter and poured if over the cake mix and pecans. Easier and more consistent. As soon as it comes out of the oven, while still hot, sprinkle with a little brown sugar. Don't do it before you bake, or the sugar gets really hard and crystallizes. Definitely good with French vanilla ice cream!

This turned out more like a crumble. Definitely did not look like the picture. Seems that's a common complaint with this Duncan Hines website. Overall though, the dessert is very tasty.

I agree. Please, Administrators to the website of Duncan Hines, check the pictures and recipes. People, be consistent!

Agreed, the section that states to sprinkle the cake mix over the cherries should be to make the batter and pour it over the cherries. That will get you the picture above everytime. :) *keep an eye on the time though 30-45 min maybe

I did the same thing years ago at my work baking contest and won a $50 gift card and the same thing everybody loved it. I had to laugh at how easy it was and it won.

It looks scrumpdilioushess and sooooo fast and easy. sunni, if yours worked, that's great. I think I'd be inclined to do what you did, too, but I'm going to have to think about it. It looks like it works and wonder how many other variations one could do with the basic idea.

I made this cake, but instead of pouring right out of box,II made the cake according to directions on box and then poured it over the fruit mixture. Looked just like the picture. Anyone try it this way?

I have made this cake many times, but add a little coconut. My cake doesn't look like this picture at all.
