A new twist on cupcakes that will bring you back to the soda shop. Cherry Vanilla Malt Cakes that look and taste like a classic malt.
- 2 cups malt powder
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1 pkg. Duncan Hines® French Vanilla Cake Mix
- 4 large eggs
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 2/3 cup Duncan Hines® Comstock® No-Sugar-Added Cherry Pie Filling
- 2 cans Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Frosting Starter
- 2 packets Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Cherry Vanilla Flavor Mix
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line muffin tins with cupcake liners.
- Combine 1 cup of malt powder with milk and mix until malt powder is dissolved.
- In a separate bowl, mix Duncan Hines® French Vanilla Cake Mix, eggs, water and vegetable oil with remaining 1 cup of malt powder.
- Add liquid malted milk mixture to cake batter and blend.
- Add in Duncan Hines® Comstock® No-Sugar-Added Cherry Pie Filling.
- Using a mixer, mix batter for 3 minutes until cherries are broken up and batter is fully combined.
- Pour batter into prepared cupcake liners, filling them no more than two-thirds full. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted into cupcakes comes out clean.
- Let cupcakes cool for 5 minutes, then turn out of pans to finish cooling.
- Pour 1 packet of Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Cherry Vanilla Flavor Mix into 1 can of Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Frosting Starter. Stir until evenly blended. Repeat with second can and packet.
- Transfer the Cherry Vanilla frosting you just created to a piping bag with an open star decorator tip.
- Pipe the frosting in a swirling motion around your cupcakes.
- Garnish with a straw and serve.
Tip:
- Remove your warm cupcakes from the cupcake tins 5 minutes after they come out of the oven to finish cooling. This prevents the cupcakes from steaming and becoming soggy.

I have been unable to find no sugar comstock cherry pie filling. I'm in the Buffalo, N.Y. area. Does anyone know where it might be sold here? Has anyone made the recipe with regular cherry pie filling?

I can't find malt powder in the store, and after searching the internet, I can't figure out what kind of malt powder should I use for this recipe?

I've tried one of them. The orange cream which is really good. I however do not use or like canned frosting so I mixed it with my own frosting and it was just fine. I always pipe my cupcakes so there is never a problem with that. I am going to try the cotton candy next for my students 8th grade dance and will post about those too!

Has anyone tried piping the frosting creations onto cupcakes with a decorating tip? If so, how did it hold up? Did it hold its shape. I've been concerned that it would fall flat. Thanks!

I just made these today. The icing isn't holding it's shape the greatest. It's slightly there but I'm guessing that by tomorrow the shape will be gone. Also, regarding this cake recipe, I'm going to have to give it a try again. I baked it 9 extra minutes but the cake isn't really right, my cupcakes also fell so I'm definitely disappointed with this recipe first time around.

I use this frosting all the time and my grandkids and everyone else love it . I have used several different flavours and it does hold its shape when piped on to cupcakes very well.

I'm chomping at the bit to do something similar. Thanks for making it easier for me! Now if I can just find the two things I need. Our stores so far don't have them.

I didn't mean our stores don't have these new frosting creations, haven't been for a couple weeks. I'm reasonably certain they'll carry at least several flavors as a trial balloon. The flavor packets will take less room than the cans, and one can fits all is nice especially since I usually need two cans. Then demand for the tried and true falls off. I need a certain cake mix they had but don't now and a mystery ingredient I'm trying to track down.
